MarcEdit with the Master: a Workshop with Terry Reese
Hosted by: KLA Technical Services Round Table (April 11, 2012, 8:00 am-2:50 pm Wichita, KS)
This presentation introduces MarcEdit, a freely downloadable metadata software suite by Terry Reese, the Gray Family Chair for Innovative Library Services at Oregon State University. The tool is designed specifically for large-batch record processing, including batch editing of MARC records, character set conversions and record extractions. MarcEdit provides a number of useful functions that can be used to simplify database maintenance activities, as well as provide libraries with an invaluable tool for customizing and correcting vendor records before introducing them to one’s database. The presentation will not only cover MARC record editing, but also discuss topics related to the processing of XML metadata, importing and exporting delimited data, the Z39.50/SRU functionality, as well as MarcEdit’s built-in OAI metadata harvester–which provides libraries a simplified method for generating MARC records from OAI repositories (like DSpace, Fedora or CONTENTdm).
